Leeds United head coach Steve Evans admits that Sunderland were not happy that Will Buckley played so little football during his loan stint at Elland Road.

Buckley was taken to Leeds on loan by Uwe Rosler, but the German was sacked in October, with former Rotherham United manager Evans appointed as his replacement.

Evans was not impressed enough with Buckley to hand him minutes on the pitch and Sunderland recalled the winger yesterday following a spell which saw him make just four appearances for Leeds, three coming from the bench.

And Evans admits Sunderland were displeased with how little Buckley played, with the Black Cats having expected the 26-year-old to feature more heavily.

"I think Sunderland Football Club were a little bit frustrated that he hadn't had the game time that was probably outlined to him by my predecessor", he said on BBC Radio Leeds.

"But I can't sit there and say whether that was right or wrong. All I know since I've come into the football club is that we've predominantly put Stuart Dallas there, who is a top player.

"So I can understand why Sunderland, in consultation with Will, would decide to go back there."

Buckley, 26, will now be looking to catch Sam Allardyce's eye at Sunderland and force his way into the reckoning at the Stadium of Light.

He heads back to a side in the thick of a Premier League relegation fight.
