Manchester City midfielder Fabian Delph has said that it was important that the side bounced back from last week’s loss to Liverpool at the Etihad, after they beat Southampton 3-1 today.

Manchester City started the game brightly with some early pressure on Ronald Koeman’s Southampton and it finally paid off when Raheem Sterling caught Maya Yoshida napping to snatch the ball away to play a square pass to Kevin De Bruyne, who gave an early lead to the home side.

The Citizens continued to put pressure on the Southampton defence, who made some uncharacteristic mistakes and Delph doubled the lead in the 19th minute from a Manchester City corner. The Saints were lucky to go in at the break just two goals down.

However, Koeman’s men fought back in the second half and their pressure on the home side defence paid off and Shane Long headed home a fine cross from Sadio Mane in the 49th minute to cut down Manchester City’s lead to just a goal. They continued to push for the equaliser and a chipped shot from Dusan Tadic was just tipped over the bar by Willy Caballero.

Manchester City scored against the run of play when De Bruyne found a perfect cross for Aleksandar Kolarov who hammered in their third goal to restore their two goal cushion.

Delph insisted that it was important that Manchester City bounced back after losing to at home to Liverpool last weekend and he was also happy to find himself on the scoresheet.

The midfielder has been struggling with the injuries since joining the club and he believes his hard work behind the scenes to find some fitness is finally paying off.

Delph told the BBC: "It was a very important game. We needed to bounce back. We managed to do that and get the three points.

“It was about giving the reaction to the manager. We did that today, and we’ll go home happy. It was very sweet to get my first goal, and I hope things can keep pushing on.

“It’s been a bit of a rollercoaster ride for me because it’s been stop-start, but training with these players can only help me.

"Football has ups and downs but we’ve got more than enough quality in the locker to bounce back from difficult weeks."
