Steve Evans has warned Leeds United fans that they should not look to Sam Byram as the side's saviour.

While Evans is a big fan of the young right-back-cum-right-winger, he has been reluctant to field him due to an ongoing contractual dispute, combined with a run of, as he sees it, poor form.

Questions were raised over why Byram did not play in Leeds' 1-0 defeat at QPR yesterday, to which Evans gave a passionate defence of his approach.

The Scot is hoping Byram will agree to extend a contract, but does not believe that restoring the youngster to the side would change Leeds' fortunes.

"I don't think he was [better than those who played], form wise. There's other coaches took him out", Evans said on BBC Radio Leeds, when asked if Byram should have played against QPR.

"We saw him come back into the team and do very well, but we've also seen him very, very poor on another night.

"But let's see where the talks [on a new contract] go Monday/Tuesday.

"I'm the one that's pushing them and then see if we can get him back in, but if we're thinking Sam Byram is the saviour of Leeds United we've got problems", Evans added.

Leeds have now lost their last two games in the Championship back to back after recording two successive wins.

They now head back to Elland Road for their next game when they face a visit from Championship promotion hopefuls Hull City on Saturday.
