Former Liverpool defender Phil Babb is of the opinion that the Reds could be in the mix for the Premier League title race by the new year if they win their “winnable” fixtures in December.

The Reds, who defeated Swansea City 1-0 yesterday, moved up to sixth place in the league standings with 23 points from 14 games, six behind leaders Manchester City.

Liverpool’s five Premier League games in December are against Newcastle United, West Bromwich Albion, Watford, Leicester City and Sunderland.

Apart from Leicester City, the other four clubs are all below Liverpool in the Premier League table, with Sunderland and Newcastle involved in the relegation battle.

And Babb, who turned out for Liverpool between 1994 and 2000, feels the Merseyside giants will be well and truly in the Premier League title race if they manage to win their upcoming easier run of fixtures in December.

“Our run of the next few league games, the Sunderlands, the Newcastles, the West Broms, the Watfords, all winnable games”, he told LFC TV.

“And if you win those in December, come January the 1st, you are right amongst these [the top clubs].

"You have got one hell of a chance.”

Jurgen Klopp’s side will next face Southampton in a League Cup encounter on Wednesday.
