Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea has identified a save he made in the 2011/12 season as his best to date.

While the Spaniard is considered one of the greatest shot-stoppers of his generation today, the former Atletico Madrid man did face some serious criticism during his first couple of seasons at Manchester United.

De Gea was considered too frail and weak to make it in English football and it was during those days that he pulled off a stunning save against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge in the 2011/12 campaign.

Manchester United fought back from three goals down to level the scores, but Chelsea were provided with another opportunity to take the lead late in the game when they were awarded a free kick in a dangerous area.

Juan Mata, then a Blue, struck the free kick as well as he could but his compatriot just tipped the ball over the bar, when it looked destined for the top left-hand corner of the goal.

De Gea still remembers that stunning effort to deny his current Manchester United team-mate and when he was asked to identify his best ever save, the Spaniard told the club’s official website: “The one from Juan [Mata] against Chelsea – the save from the free-kick [in February 2012].”

Mata did beat De Gea earlier in the game when he scored from a sumptuous volley to score Chelsea’s second goal.
