Jurgen Klopp says having Steven Gerrard back in training at Liverpool has put smiles on the players' faces, but joked the legendary midfielder will not be playing against Southampton tomorrow.

Gerrard is currently back in the UK after his season in the MLS with LA Galaxy came to an end. Keen to stay fit, the former England captain has been training with his former club at Melwood.

Klopp is happy to have Gerrard training with the squad and stressed the door is always open for the ex-Reds skipper, who puts smiles of faces.

"He won't play tomorrow", Klopp joked at a press conference, when asked about Gerrard.

"But he was in good shape. I told the team before training it's completely normal and it should always be like this if you are a player like Steven Gerrard at Liverpool, the door has to be open always", the German boss continued.

"It's an important sign for all players if you behave like him and for 15 years at the club, it's easy to come back and that's how it is in this moment.

"For us it's a good situation. He was a very important player at this club and he is a very important player in this moment because he is in training.

"Everyone had a smile on their face when they saw Stevie."

2016 could be Gerrard's final year as a player as his deal with LA Galaxy is due to run out at the end of next year's MLS campaign.

The veteran midfielder left Liverpool upon the expiry of his contract last summer, putting pen to paper on an 18-month deal with the Californian club.
