Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has lavished praise on Wayne Rooney, his club captain and match winner against Liverpool today.

The Anfield outfit dominated Manchester United in the first half and created much more than Van Gaal’s men, but Rooney scored the decisive goal, their only shot on target all game, with just around twelve minutes of normal time left to earn all three points for his side.

For once Manchester United didn’t have the lion’s share of the ball and were mostly second best to Liverpool at Anfield, but their captain’s smashing volley to the roof of Simon Mignolet’s net was enough to get them the win over their arch rivals.

It was the fourth game in a row that Rooney has scored for the Red Devils, a feat he hasn’t touched since 2012 and the Manchester United boss is pleased to see his captain hitting form at a crucial point of their season.

The Manchester United boss told MUTV, when asked about Rooney’s influence on the game: "I am very pleased and he is very pleased also. I asked him to score here and he makes a lot of goals now in a row.

“I think he is a fantastic Manchester United striker for the media but he was also that in the first half of the season."

It was Rooney’s 176th league goal for Manchester United and in the process he surpassed Thierry Henry’s record of scoring the most number of Premier League goals for a single cub.
