Borussia Dortmund legend Stephane Chapuisat believes Jurgen Klopp leaving the Ruhr giants at the end of last season was best for the club, allowing Thomas Tuchel to revitalise BVB.

After being tipped to challenge Bayern Munich for the Bundesliga title last term, Dortmund slumped and spent the first half of the season battling relegation.

While Dortmund eventually managed a finish of seventh despite losing 14 of their 34 games, Klopp opted to quit as coach and was replaced this summer by Tuchel, who currently has BVB sitting second in the table after breathing new life into the team.

For Chapuisat, Klopp's departure after seven years at the helm was best all round and allowed players previously written off to shine again.

"It was good to make a change after seven years", the Swiss told German news agency SID.

"Players blossomed where you no longer believed they would. Jurgen Klopp probably felt that himself.

"It was simply the best for both sides."

Chapuisat turned out as a striker for Dortmund between 1991 and 1999, winning two Bundesliga titles and famously the Champions League in 1997.

He made over 100 appearances at international level for Switzerland.
