Leeds United and Sheffield Wednesday target Aiden McGeady is set to leave Everton on loan for a Championship club, Toffees boss Roberto Martinez has confirmed.

McGeady has been struggling for playing time at Goodison Park and Martinez has opted to allow the Republic of Ireland international to drop down a division to secure minutes on the pitch.

Martinez says that Everton have agreed terms with two Championship sides and the ball is now in McGeady's court to decide where he wants to go.

The Irishman has been linked with both Sheffield Wednesday and Leeds, though Blackburn Rovers are another possible destination, and Martinez thinks a move is close.

Martinez said via his club's site: "It seems very close.

"We've agreed terms with two teams in the Championship. It's just a matter of time before one of the deals is clinched."

And the Spaniard stressed that McGeady needs the minutes on the pitch he is lacking at Everton, especially with Euro 2016 on the horizon in the summer.

"Aiden needs to play and it's a really good opportunity for him to do that in a very demanding fixture list for a team that can get a really good tempo into Aiden for the Euros.

"That will make sure he comes back having had a good period of football and of having an impact for whichever team he joins."
