Sunderland forward Steven Fletcher is one step closer to a move to Marseille after passing a medical with the club, according to France Football.

After starting the season as a first eleven player, the Scot has been reduced to a bit part role at Sunderland and has not played a single minute of league football since Boxing Day last year.

It emerged earlier this morning that Marseille are in talks with Sunderland over an agreement to sign the 28-year-old striker on loan until the end of the season and his move to France has moved one step closer.

Fletcher crossed the English channel to travel to France earlier today and it has been suggested that he has passed a medical ahead of his proposed loan move to the Stade Velodrome until the end of the season.

Once he signs the contract with his new team, Fletcher will be looking forward to playing more first team football and proving his worth before next summer, when he will be out of contract at Sunderland.

The Scot joined the Black Cats from Wolves in 2012 and has scored 23 goals over 108 appearances for the Wearside outfit over the last three-and-a-half seasons.

Following stints with Hibernian, Wolves, Burnley and Sunderland, the move to Marseille will be his first foray outside British football.
