Manchester United have lined up Jose Mourinho as Louis van Gaal’s replacement, but the Dutchman is unlikely to get the sack until the end of the season, according to Spanish radio station Cadena Cope.

The Portuguese has been linked with the Manchester United manager’s job since he left Chelsea in December, but despite a harrowing run of form towards the end of the year, the Red Devils decided to support Van Gaal.

However, Manchester United have identified Mourinho as the Dutchman’s replacement and the club have reached a gentleman’s agreement with the Portuguese after weeks of talks, over a deal which would see him replace Van Gaal.

But it has been suggested that unless something drastic happens, Manchester United are unlikely to sack Van Gaal until the end of the season, when a possible change in the Old Trafford dugout is expected to take place.

The former Real Madrid and Chelsea manager has given his nod to the agreement and is willing to wait for Van Gaal to leave the club, possibly next summer, before he takes up the reins of the 20-time English champions.

It has also been suggested that should results take a turn for the worse and Van Gaal gets fired, Mourinho is ready to take over from the Dutchman with immediate effect.

Manchester United’s form has improved over the last couple of weeks with convincing wins over Derby and Stoke, but they are five points off the pace when it comes to finishing in the top four and need to get into a run of victories in order to end the season strongly.
