Fabio Borini feels returning to Anfield for the first time since leaving Liverpool in the summer will give him an extra push, ahead of Sunderland’s Premier League clash with the Reds later in the day.

The forward joined Liverpool from Roma in 2013, but after failing to make an impact at the Merseyside club Borini was shipped off to Sunderland on loan for the 2014/15 campaign.

The Italian refused to make his move permanent the following season despite the two clubs agreeing on a fee, with the 24-year-old instead deciding to fight for his place at Liverpool.

But after another disappointing season at Anfield, Borini finally joined the Black Cats on a four-year deal in the summer.

And the striker, who is relishing the prospect of returning to his former stomping ground, is aware of the threats posed by Liverpool.

“It is my first game back at Anfield to play as an opponent”, he told Sunderland’s official site.

“It will be nice and it will be a nice feeling with a special atmosphere for me, so it will be a new feeling but also give me an extra push.

“Liverpool have shown they can play unbelievable games but then three days later play a totally different one and not reach the standards they want.”

Borini, who has scored two goals in 16 games in all competitions for Sunderland this season, amassed 38 appearances for Liverpool, scoring three times.
