Leeds United head coach Steve Evans has joked that Nottingham Forest midfielder David Vaughan marked Lewis Cook so closely yesterday that he would have gone to the shower with him at half time.

Forest chose to task Vaughan with a man-marking job on creative midfielder Cook and the Wales international succeeded in keeping the Leeds' youngster quiet throughout the Championship fixture at Elland Road.

Evans admits that Vaughan marked Cook closely, but feels that is testament to the midfielder's talent.

And the Scot feels that the 19-year-old will learn from the experience of Vaughan acting as his shadow at Elland Road.

Evans told a press conference: "He's a kid isn't he? He's a young teenager.

"But it shows you [how good he is] when they stick Vaughan on him, such an experienced and good player as Vaughan.

"I think if Cook had gone for a shower at half time he'd have passed him the shower gel – that's how tight he was to him all afternoon.

"He will learn from that. We spoke to him afterwards about how to lose players in those situations", the Leeds boss continued.

"But that's what happens when you're a top player and at 18 [19, ed.] to be man-marked in the Championship speaks just about how good he is."

So far this season Cook has clocked up 29 appearances for the Whites in all competitions, but the midfielder has only manager to hit the back of the net once.

Cook attracted interest from Premier League side Bournemouth during the winter transfer window, but Leeds fought off attempts to snap up the 19-year-old.
