Louis van Gaal is pleased with his Manchester United side's performance in their 1-1 draw away at Chelsea today, but the Dutchman is not happy to have lost ground on the top four.

The first half was largely a dull affair as both sides fought to control the game. There was a talking point on the stroke of half time though when Chelsea had a penalty appeal for a Daley Blind handball turned down.

The Blues brought on Eden Hazard in the 53rd minute, but lost Kurt Zouma to injury soon afterwards.

The defender appeared to have twisted his knee after he landed badly from a jump and he was replaced by Gary Cahill.

Manchester United then pulled ahead on the hour mark when Jesse Lingard turned and swept a shot into the top corner of the net, delighting the visitors.

But Chelsea did not give up and when six minutes of injury time was signalled drew level when Diego Costa struck.

It finished 1-1 at Stamford Bridge and Manchester United are now six points off fourth spot and seven off second and third.

For Van Gaal, Manchester United played well, but he is concerned about the growing gap.

"When your aim is to be third or second or first then you need to win because the gap is already big. The gap is now bigger than before so that's not good", he said on Sky Sports.

"The equaliser we conceded is also defensive organisation, you have to be composed and then you can play them out, not kicking the ball away."

The Red Devils boss was also less than pleased at the performance of the referee and added: "And then all the free-kicks. I don’t think all the fouls were free-kicks but this referee gave a lot of free-kicks at the end of the game.

"The [injury] time was already over, the six minutes, and then he let [Chelsea] kick the corner and when we had a free pitch for us he whistles.

"He did that also in the first half. I think you cannot do that. Otherwise, you don’t let him kick the corner, because I don't think that is fair for two teams."
