Leeds United defender Liam Cooper has insisted that he never thought his side would suffer relegation this season, as they have too much quality in their ranks.

While losing 4-1 to Huddersfield in the local derby was disappointing, the defeat didn’t dent Leeds’ league position as they remained 13th in the league table, maintaining a more than safe distance from the relegation dogfight.

Despite a few disappointing results, Steve Evans has managed to steer Leeds away from the relegation scrap, something they looked like getting involved in when the Scot took charge of the club in October last year.

However, Cooper insisted that the thought of relegation never crossed his mind, as he believes that Leeds have too much quality in their ranks and just need a little extra to push for the playoff places in the near future.

The defender told LUTV: “Personally, I have not thought about relegation once.

“I have always thought that we are too good to go down; we just need that extra to be pushing for the playoff places.

“And I am sure the people at the club saw that.”

Leeds will want to come away with three points on board from the New York Stadium once the final whistle is blown against Rotherham on Saturday afternoon.
