Former Rangers manager Ally McCoist admits the Gers need to strengthen considerably in the summer if they want to challenge Celtic for the title next season.

The Gers secured the Scottish Championship title and automatic promotion to the Premiership on Tuesday night with a 1-0 win over Dumbarton at Ibrox.

While Mark Warburton has insisted that there is a considerable gap in quality between his squad and Rangers, some are hoping that the Glasgow giants challenge the Bhoys’ stranglehold on the Premiership next season.

McCoist feels Rangers are not in a position to challenge the Bhoys for the title, but admits that a good summer of recruitment could change things once the new season roll out.

The former Gers boss admits that Warburton needs more quality players in the squad to challenge Celtic, but also added that the Scottish champions will also look to strengthen to counter Rangers’ threat.

Speaking to the Herald Scotland, McCoist said: “At the moment, no, I don’t think Rangers can [challenge for the title straight away] but I am talking about immediately.

"We don’t know what is going to happen in the summer.

“It is going to be an important summer for all clubs, including Rangers and Celtic, to see what kind of talent they can bring in because that is a massively important factor.

“Everyone is automatically saying that Rangers need players, and they do, there is absolutely no doubt about that.

"If Rangers have got any dreams of challenging Celtic, and indeed potentially winning the championship, they need to bring players in.

“But, having said that, Celtic, they are clever men that run [that] football club, and they will know that they need to strengthen as well.”
