Former Leeds United striker Noel Whelan thinks the club will have good chance of finishing in the playoffs next season if they manage to replicate their recent performances for the majority of the 2016/17 campaign.

The Whites held fourth-placed Hull City 2-2 at the weekend to extend their unbeaten run in the Championship to four games.

Steve Evans’ team, who headed into the match at the KC Stadium on the back of a three-match winning streak, managed to beat Hull 2-1 in the corresponding fixture at Elland Road in December.

And Whelan, who admitted that Leeds will be in a good place to challenge for the playoffs if they maintain such strong displays against the big teams, however, urged the Yorkshire giants to bag the full points against the minnows.

“Our performances recently and against Hull say that we can compete”, he wrote in his column in the Yorkshire Evening Post.

“Over the two games against Hull we have taken four points – against one of the best sides in the Championship.

“If you can do that and maintain that throughout a season by winning those games against the big boys at home and then taking possibly a point away, then you are going to be in with a real good shot of ending up in the play-offs, if not automatic promotion at the end of the season.

“But it’s the consistency that you need and not just against the big clubs but also the clubs that are down at the bottom, the lesser clubs where you should be expecting to get the three points and get the wins.”

Leeds, who are currently 12th in the standings with 58 points from 44 outings, will next face Charlton Athletic in a home fixture on Saturday.
