Rangers Under-17s coach Billy Kirkwood believes it is always going to be a big ask to convince senior team boss Mark Warburton to trust in untested youngsters, however he is hopeful the talents at the club can push for first team action.

Warburton has consistently explained that there is a route for young talents to progress from the club's academy and into the first team and he has included a number of youngsters in his squads at points this season.

But Kirkwood, who rates his current Under-17 crop highly, knows that breaking through on a consistent basis will be tough and Warburton himself has insisted he will only trust players when they are good enough and warrant that trust.

Kirkwood was asked on Rangers TV about having high hopes for the Under-17s and he explained: "We've got high hopes in terms of first of all getting them contracts and improved contracts, getting them under the manager's eyes and David Weir's eyes and hopefully they catch the eye, and of course getting into the first team.

"Liam Burt is a good example, getting on the bench and getting a wee taste of first team football", the Rangers youth coach continued.

"We are hoping that can happen more often than not, but it is a big ask for the manager to put untried and untested young kids on the bench and eventually onto the pitch.

"So it's up to these young kids to keep on improving daily", he added.

Rangers have already wrapped up the Scottish Championship title and face their final league game of the season at St Mirren this coming weekend.

It remains to be seen if Warburton will look to trust any young talents.
