Rangers boss Mark Warburton has insisted that Martyn Waghorn will feature for an “hour or so” against St. Mirren in a Scottish Championship fixture at the weekend, along with then playing in a behind closed doors friendly against Tottenham Hotspur.

The striker, who joined Rangers from Wigan Athletic on a three-year deal last summer, has been sidelined since picking up a knee injury in February.

Waghorn has been in stupendous form for the Gers, scoring 28 goals and providing eight assists in 34 appearances in all competitions; he was named Rangers’ Players’ Player of the Season last weekend.

And Warburton explained that Waghorn will also be involved in the friendly game with Tottenham Hotspur next month to make the 26-year-old match ready for the Scottish Cup final against Hibernian at Hampden on 21st May.

“We have missed Martyn in terms of him offering us something different”, the manager said in his pre-match press conference yesterday.

“So he will be involved on Sunday. [He scored] 28 goals before the injury and he is desperate to get back.

“He will have an hour or so on Sunday, use the friendly game against Spurs and then be ready for the cup final.”

Waghorn, who is a product of Sunderland’s youth system, also counts Charlton Athletic, Leicester City and Hull City amongst his former employers.

He has also represented England up to Under-21 level.
