Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has confirmed that midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain will not be fit for the European Championship in the summer.

Oxlade-Chamberlain has a knee injury and Wenger is only predicting a July return for the midfielder, something which means he will be unavailable for England boss Roy Hodgson to take to France.

Asked about Oxlade-Chamberlain in a press conference this morning, ahead of the Gunners' weekend meeting with Manchester City, Wenger said: "There is no chance of the Euros for him.

"He will be back at the beginning of July", the Arsenal manager added.

And Wenger explained that he sees an up to eight week absence for the player, saying: "We lost Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and he will be out for six to eight weeks I think."

The Frenchman, whose side are bidding to lock down a top four spot in their final Premier League games of the campaign, have received a boost in the shape of Santi Cazorla, who has suffered no ill effects from his run-out in the club's Under-21s.

"Cazorla came through the Under-21s game well", Wenger explained, before turning to defender Per Mertesacker.

"The season is over for Mertesacker due to his hamstring."

Arsenal are up against Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday, before they then finish their campaign by hosting Aston Villa at home.
