Liverpool legend Ronnie Whelan believes the Reds will be better off if they play on the front foot against Sevilla in the Europa League final later this month.

Losing 1-0 in the first leg in Spain, Liverpool started the game on the front foot last night and provided an attacking masterclass as they scored a decisive 3-0 win over Villarreal at Anfield to book their berth in the final.

The Reds did the same when they came back from the dead against Borussia Dortmund in the quarter-finals to upset Thomas Tuchel’s men and Whelan thinks that it would be unwise to change their style for the final.

Sevilla have won the last two editions of the competition, but the Liverpool legend believes that the Reds should play on the front foot in the final, and trying to be defensive could prove to be costly for Jurgen Klopp’s men.

Talking about the final, Whelan said on LFC TV: “I think they've got to go with the tactics they had tonight.

“Liverpool with all the power and determination they showed, getting the ball back high up the pitch and creating chances for people, I don't think they can change and sit back.

“They are better when they go out front foot, get the ball back and create chances.

“Against Sevilla it will be difficult, but I don't want them to change from that high energy approach.”

Liverpool have a little less than two weeks to prepare for the Europa League final on 18th May in Basel.
