Gus Poyet, who is the bookmakers' favourite to take over at Nottingham Forest, has been tipped to become the new coach of La Liga side Real Betis.

Betis are looking to make an appointment quickly in order to prepare for pre-season and Poyet, according to El Decano Deportivo, cited by Catalan daily Sport, is the leading contender for the hot seat.

The 47-year-old recently concluded a spell at Greek side AEK Athens, while he also has experience of Spanish football from his playing days, with time spent at Real Zaragoza between 1990 and 1997.

Betis currently sit in 14th spot in La Liga with a single game to play, having taken 42 points from 37 games so far this season.

Poyet has been mooted as a potential managerial appointment at Nottingham Forest, but the English Championship club may be about to lose out to Betis for the Uruguayan's services.

Poyet kicked off his managerial career in England with Brighton, while he then took charge of Premier League side Sunderland.

The Uruguayan is Betis' preferred appointment, ahead of Quique Setien, Juande Ramos, Michael Laudrup and Philippe Montanier.
