Former Chelsea boss Roberto Di Matteo is in contention to become the manager at Watford this summer, according to Sky Italia.

Quique Sanchez Flores succeeded in keeping the Hornets away from the relegation dogfight with an impressive first half of the season and also managed an FA Cup semi-final appearance.

However, their form has dipped towards the latter half of the campaign, and there are suggestions that the Spaniard will be shown the door at the end of the season, despite Watford finishing mid-table in their first year back in the Premier League.

Former Inter Milan boss Walter Mazzarri is said to be the Watford hierarchy’s choice as Sanchez’s replacement and the Hornets have already initiated contact with the Italian’s representatives.

However, he is not the only candidate in the race as it has been suggested that former Chelsea manager Di Matteo is also in contention to succeed Flores at Vicarage Road in the summer.

Watford are expected to hold further talks with the Italian in the next few days and he could be on his way back to management in England before the start of the 2016/17 season.

Di Matteo managed West Brom in England before winning the Champions League with Chelsea and also had an unsuccessful spell at Schalke, which came to an end last year.
