Rangers starlet Jordan Thompson has revealed that he looks up to his former Manchester United academy team-mate Marcus Rashford, who was earlier today included in England’s 26-man provisional squad for the European Championship in the summer.

While Thompson was released by Manchester United last summer, Rashford has managed to make a big impact since breaking into the club’s first team in February.

The 18-year-old, who made his senior Manchester United debut in a 5-1 win over FC Midtjylland in the Europa League, found the back of the net twice in the game to become the club’s youngest ever scorer in European competitions.

In total, Rashford has thus far scored seven goals and provided two assists in 16 appearances in all competitions for Manchester United.

The striker is yet to earn a senior cap for England, but Thompson still backed Rashford to make his mark for the Three Lions if he makes the final cut for the European Championship in France.

“While he [Marcus] is younger than me I can still look up to him playing in the Premier League and I just want to take my chance if I get it next year”, Thompson told Rangers’ official site.

“It’s brilliant seeing those boys do well, I love seeing it, my other mate Joe Riley is at United too and he made his debut in the Europa League.

“These are boys I was playing with last year and they are all going ahead now and skipping the under 21s and going straight into the first-team and it’s brilliant to see.

“I played with him at United and we’re friends, we still speak now.

“Marcus was always brilliant on the ball and he just had to get better off it and improve his work rate, which he has learnt from playing with the first-team.

“He has taken the game by the scruff of its neck whenever he has played.

“Marcus is still learning the game, he is only 18, but he is at one of the biggest clubs in the world so I don’t see why he couldn’t go to the Euros to get experience.

“He is scoring a lot of goals now so why he couldn’t go and he has all the ability in the world so he could make an impact.”
