Chelsea have made initial contact with Everton as they look to take Romelu Lukaku back to Stamford Bridge in the summer transfer window.

Lukaku joined Everton from Chelsea in 2013, initially on loan, and the Toffees paid a club record fee of £27m to the west London outfit a year later to sign him on a permanent contract.

The Belgian has progressed steadily on Merseyside and despite Everton’s underwhelming 2015/16 campaign, the forward has remained in good form, scoring 25 goals in all competitions for the club.

His father has already said that the forward could be leaving the club before the European Championship starts next month and Manchester United are believed to be one of the clubs interested in the striker.

However, Chelsea are doing the early running to recapture Lukaku and according to Belgian daily Het Laatste Nieuws, the club have contacted Everton to probe the possibility of signing the player.

With Diego Costa’s future at the club uncertain, Chelsea are keen to recruit a young and physical striker, around whom they can build their future attack, and they are ready to re-sign Lukaku this summer.

Chelsea initially signed the forward from Anderlecht in 2011, but despite an impressive loan spell at West Brom, Lukaku made just 15 senior appearances for the club before leaving them in 2014.

It remains to be seen whether the Belgian is interested in returning to Stamford Bridge after struggling to get into the first team in his initial stint at the club.
