Former Celtic striker Craig Beattie thinks the Bhoys appointing Brendan Rodgers as their new manager is a “massive coup”.

The Scottish champions appointed the former Liverpool boss on a one-year rolling contract yesterday to succeed Ronny Deila, who parted ways with the club after the end of the season.

Several candidates such as David Moyes, Owen Coyle, Neil Lennon and Roy Keane were also in the running for the Celtic job, but Rodgers ultimately got the nod.

The Northern Irishman, who was also linked with a return to his former club Swansea City, had been out of a job since being sacked by Liverpool in October.

And Beattie feels Rodgers is a great appointment by Celtic, having previously played under the 43-year-old at Swansea.

"As big as Celtic are, I think it is a massive coup getting Brendan Rodgers", he told the Herald Scotland.

"He has got great experience in the Premier League and quite apart from everything else at 43 he is still very young and ambitious.

“He could have sat out and waited on a big job in England again but it shows you the ambition he has got that he wanted to get back in and manage at a big club and it really is a wonderful signing.

"Without a doubt he is the best manager I have worked with and that is not being disrespectful to any of the managers I have worked with, because some of them have been brilliant, guys like Gordon Strachan and Martin O'Neill.

"But Brendan was the best. He is very thorough, very articulate, a great motivator and a great man manager. I think Celtic have pulled one out of the bag here to be honest with you."

Rodgers nearly won the Premier League title with Liverpool in the 2013/14 campaign, but a late wobble meant the Reds had to be satisfied with second spot behind Manchester City.
