Brendan Rodgers is aiming for Celtic to emulate clubs such as Benfica and FC Porto when it comes to achievements on the European front.

The former Liverpool manager was presented as the new Celtic boss earlier today and has signed a 12-month rolling contract to succeed Ronny Deila in the hot seat at the Scottish champions.

Deila failed to guide Celtic to the Champions League group stage during his two seasons in charge and the Bhoys are desperate for Rodgers to make progress on the European front.

Rodgers is aiming to qualify for the group stage, but then to go further and push on and make a mark in Europe, in the same way Benfica and Porto, two clubs with smaller budgets than the elite sides, regularly manage to do.

"First and foremost we want to be competing in the Champions League and to do that you've got to get there", he said in a press conference.

"Then your objective is can you get out of the group stage and beyond.

"Of course it's difficult with the money that's around, but if you look at Porto, Benfica, those sorts of teams, dominant in their own league, qualify into European football, Champions League and can go on and make a good fist of it", Rodgers continued, before explaining he is sure Celtic will back him financially to the best of their ability.

"I know that the club will do everything they can, give me every support and that was what drew me to here.

"They will offer me every opportunity to take the club forward", the Northern Irishman added.
