Manchester United midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger is on the verge of returning to full fitness and is expected to be named in Germany’s final 23-man squad for the European Championship next week.

The Germany captain has played very little football since the turn of the year due to injuries, but the big blow came in the form of a knee injury in training with the national team squad in March.

The injury raised serious doubts about his involvement in the European Championship this summer, but Joachim Low insisted that he was willing to wait until the last moment for his captain.

And it seems the Germany head coach’s prayers have been answered as according to Sport Bild fresh medical reports on Monday suggested that Schweinsteiger’s knee ligaments have healed completely.

Unless he suffers from any other setback, the midfielder is expected to be named in the 23-man squad next Tuesday that will travel to France for this summer’s extravaganza.

Schweinsteiger played a pivotal role in Germany winning the World Cup two years ago and will be hoping to lead his side to another success in the Gallic lands in the next couple of months.

However, with Louis van Gaal gone, it remains to be seen whether Schweinsteiger has a future at Manchester United beyond the summer under the tutelage of Jose Mourinho, who is expected to take charge of the club sometime this week.
