Joey Barton has confirmed his decision to leave Burnley, with the midfielder set to sign for Scottish giants Rangers.

The midfielder is out of contract this summer and Burnley had offered him a deal to remain at Turf Moor after helping the club win promotion to the Premier League this season.

But Rangers boss Mark Warburton steered the Gers into the race and slapped a contract offer in front of the midfielder, as he looks to strengthen his squad over the summer months.

Barton has not been able to resist the lure of Ibrox and as such his time at Burnley is over, even though remaining with the Clarets would have meant Premier League football.

The midfielder wrote on Twitter: "Thanks to all the Burnley fans and everyone connected to the club. Amazing support this year that will live with me for a lifetime.

"Toughest decision of my professional life to leave an amazing set of people and a phenomenal culture behind", Barton continued.

"Club is in a great place on and off the pitch with great custodians at the helm. Thanks again for the opportunity to represent your club.

"I was presented with an opportunity and challenge the competitive animal in me just could not turn down. Onwards and upwards now."

Rangers won promotion from the Scottish Championship to the Premiership this season and as such will lock horns with fierce rivals Celtic next term, as they bid to stop the Bhoys winning six top flight titles in a row.
