Oldham Athletic boss John Sheridan, who has been linked with taking over at Leeds United, is to be appointed the new boss of Notts County.

Sheridan, a former Leeds player, had been mooted as a possible successor to Steve Evans at Elland Road, with the Scot having been left to see out his contract until the end of June by owner Massimo Cellino.

But Sheridan is heading not to Elland Road, but to Meadow Lane instead, as according to BBC Nottingham he will be appointed by Notts County in the next few days.

Sheridan guided Oldham to a finish of 17th in League One this season, while Notts County finished 17th in League Two.

The former midfielder will be tasked with leading Notts County up the fourth tier, with promotion to the third tier their aim.

Leeds meanwhile have made an approach to speak to Bristol Rovers boss Darrell Clarke, despite the fact he has never managed higher than the fourth tier of English football.

Clarke, whom Bristol Rovers have offered a new three-year deal, led his side to third spot in League Two this season and with it promotion to League One.

If the Whites do want to speak to Sheridan, they appear to have left it too late.
