Arsenal new boy Granit Xhaka has revealed that he does not regret his decision to turn down the chance to join Atletico Madrid last summer.

The Swiss international was snapped up by Arsenal from Borussia Monchengladbach on a long-term deal yesterday.

Although the Gunners declined to divulge the transfer fee, it is believed that the north London outfit paid around €45m to snap up Xhaka.

Xhaka, who joined Gladbach from Basel in 2012, scored three goals and provided two assists in 36 appearances in all competitions in the 2015/16 campaign, while in total he turned out 140 times for the German outfit, netting nine times and setting up eight goals.

The 23-year-old was linked with a move to Atletico Madrid at the start of last season, but he declined.

And Xhaka, who is aware that the Spanish giants will be playing their second Champions League final in three years, explained that he was not ready for a switch last season.

“It’s a compliment to Atletico that they have been in the Champions League final twice in three years”, he told Swiss daily Blick.

“But a year ago was not the right time for me to move.”

Xhaka has 39 caps and six goals for Switzerland to his name.
