Jose Mourinho is keen to take Roma defender Kostas Manolas to Manchester United, however swoops for Everton's John Stones and Real Madrid's Raphael Varane remain possible.

The Portuguese, who was sacked by Chelsea in December amid a disastrous start to the season for the Blues, is expected to be announced as Manchester United's new manager tomorrow.

Mourinho is keen to reinforce the club's defence and has set his sights on Roma's Manolas.

However, according to Italian broadcaster Sky Italia, he is also keen on Stones and Varane as potential signings to shore up the Red Devils' backline.

Mourinho tried to snap up Stones during his spell as Chelsea manager, but the Toffees stood firm and refused to sell the promising defender to the Stamford Bridge club.

Now Mourinho could try his luck again at Manchester United, looking to tempt Everton into cashing in on Stones.

Varane meanwhile played under Mourinho at Real Madrid and may be keen to link up with the Portuguese tactician once again.

It remains to be seen though whether Real Madrid will play ball.
