Manchester United legend Lou Macari has claimed that new Red Devils manager Jose Mourinho is in the right place at the right time.

Macari, who himself has made 329 appearances for the Old Trafford based club during an 11-year stay, arrived at Manchester United in 1973 from Celtic.

The Red Devils confirmed on Friday morning that they have appointed Mourinho as their new manager, after reports following Louis van Gaal’s axing had strongly linked the Portuguese with the managerial position.

Manchester United finished fifth in the Premier League and missed out on next season’s Champions League, but went on to win the FA Cup after ousting Crystal Palace 2-1 in extra time in the final during Van Gaal’s final game in charge.

Macari, who has formerly managed Stoke City, West Ham United and Celtic, has claimed that Mourinho is in the right place at the right time.

He told the official Manchester United website: “His idea about football is simple – he wants to win games and he will want Manchester United to be at the top of everything.

“In Europe, he has got to get us back into the Champions League and he has to build a side that can do well in the Champions League”, added the Scotsman.

"There is a lot of hard work ahead, but I do think he is in the right place at the right time.”
