Former Rangers defender Hugh Burns thinks winning the Scottish Premiership title must be the Gers' goal for next season and there is no reason why the Ibrox outfit cannot challenge rivals Celtic at the summit.

Mark Warburton led Rangers to the Scottish Championship title this term, the Gers easing to the crown after a challenge from Hibernian faded, while he also guided his team to the Scottish Challenge Cup and the final of the Scottish Cup.

Meanwhile, in the top tier Celtic clinched their sixth top flight title in a row and now the Bhoys are openly talking of winning ten in a row.

But Burns thinks Rangers will be ready to challenge Celtic's dominance at once and with smart recruitment he does not see why the club cannot win their 55th top flight title next season.

He told Rangers TV, when asked if title number 55 is achievable: "I think yes, with what we've got and with recruitment being good and strong and adding to what we've got.

"There's absolutely no reason [why not].

"Players have been quoted saying they want to go and win the league next year.

"You can't be runners-up with Rangers in the Premiership, regardless of what you spend or what you don't spend", Burns added.

Rangers have already added midfielders Joey Barton, Josh Windass, Matt Crooks and Jordan Rossiter to the ranks.
