Sevilla sporting director Ramon Rodriguez Verdejo, known as Monchi in Spain, could well join Manchester United this summer, it has been claimed, though Real Madrid continue to be an option for the deal-maker.

It emerged last night that the 47-year-old Spaniard, a former Sevilla goalkeeper, has informed the club that he wants to leave soon, and has cited personal issues as being behind his decision.

The former goalkeeper has played a major role in the recruitment policy at Sevilla since taking up the sporting director’s post in 2000, and has been credited for developing a robust youth policy for the club.

The partnership of Unai Emery and Monchi has been credited for Sevilla’s recent success, which includes three consecutive Europa Leagues, and was expected to continue into the new season.

However, it seems the Spaniard is set to leave the club this summer and according to Basque daily El Correo, Monchi has an offer to join English giants Manchester United.

The Red Devils are said to be keen to pair Jose Mourinho with a sporting director this summer, and have already been rejected by Andrea Berta, the Atletico Madrid director of football.

And their eyes have now turned towards Monchi and while Sevilla remain keen to convince the 47-year-old to stay at the club, Manchester United are working to take him to Old Trafford.

Real Madrid are also interested in appointing Monchi and though he has knocked back their interest are still trying to convince him to head to the Bernabeu.
