Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone has urged the club hierarchy to get Diego Costa back to the Vicente Calderon this summer, according to Spanish daily AS.

Chelsea snapped up the Spanish international from Atletico Madrid in 2014 after a fantastic season in Spain, and he played a key role in Chelsea winning the league title in his first campaign at Stamford Bridge.

The 27-year-old forward struggled a bit last season as Chelsea slumped to tenth in the Premier League table, but he still found a way to score 16 goals in all competitions for the Blues.

And now Simeone wants Atletico Madrid to try to re-sign the forward from Chelsea and has identified the Spaniard as his top target for the summer transfer window.

The Argentine coach has asked the club hierarchy to plot a move that would see Costa return to Atletico Madrid in the coming months, ahead of the new season.

Atletico Madrid are also interested in seeing Costa return to the club, but are aware that there are major hurdles to clear if they want the Spaniard to return to the Spanish capital.

Chelsea are not expected to sell Costa if they don’t sign one or two attackers and therefore, Atletico Madrid are aware that they will have to remain calm all summer if they want the striker.

He has a contract until 2019 with the Blues.
