West Ham co-chairman David Gold has admitted the club need to spend big money, but stressed it must also be spent wisely.

The Hammers have moved quickly in the transfer market ahead of the season where they will move to the new Olympic Stadium and have already completed deals to sign players such as Havard Nordtveit and Sofiane Feghouli.

After finishing seventh in the league table last season, West Ham earned an opportunity to play in the Europa League, but the club have a bigger ambition of playing in the Champions League.

West Ham have been in the market for a top striker who can score the goals that will catapult them into the top four next season, but saw their big money bid for Alexandre Lacazette rejected by Lyon earlier in the summer.

And despite having the muscle to spend more money, Gold insisted that it is important that the club maintain their financial wisdom during the transfer window.
