Aston Villa are all set to win the race for Bournemouth defender Tommy Elphick, beating off competition from Leeds United.

Last season's bottom side in the Premier League recently lodged a bid of £3m to sign the 28-year-old, an offer which was accepted and the Midlands side were given permission to speak to Elphick.

Leeds have also been keen on the experienced defender, while Bournemouth were hoping to convince him to renew his contract.

Now, according to the Bournemouth Echo, Elphick is all set to sign for Aston Villa after he cut short his honeymoon in Italy to return to England.

Elphick is expected to now undergo a medical with Aston Villa ahead of signing on the dotted line for Roberto Di Matteo's side.

Bournemouth paid only £175,000 to sign Elphick from Brighton in 2012 and he was a key man in the Cherries' rise up to the Premier League.

Last term injuries played their part in keeping Elphick's appearances in the top flighr down to just 12.

He will now switch his focus to trying to help Aston Villa bounce back to the Premier League at the first attempt.
