Failing to qualify for the Champions League meant that Manchester United were ruled out as a potential destination for Mats Hummels, the defender has revealed.

Hummels weighed up his future as the recently concluded season approached its end and eventually decided to leave Borussia Dortmund for Bayern Munich.

He had long been linked with Manchester United, but the Germany international explained that the absence of Champions League football clearly ruled out moving to one club, with the nod being towards Old Trafford.

Speaking to German daily the Suddeutsche Zeitung, Hummels explained: "Fundamentally, England, Spain and Germany were the relevant leagues I could see myself playing football in.

"But at this stage there just was not that one English club where the overall package was fitting", the new Bayern Munich defender continued.

"The overall package means: a club which fascinates me; a club I have always wanted to join, and where the sporting constellation is right, and which of course plays Champions League football next season.

"And because of the latter one club was ruled out, and you can envision which club that was", Hummels concluded.

The centre-back put pen to paper on a five-year contract with Bayern Munich, which kicks in on 1st July, keeping him at the Allianz Arena until the summer of 2021.

By the time he sees out his deal with Bayern Munich, Hummels will be 32 years old and it remains to be seen if he ever samples the Premier League as a player.
