Rangers managing director Stewart Robertson feels the Gers and Celtic will bring back some positivity to Scottish football next season.

Since Rangers’ demise in 2012, Celtic have dominated the scene in the top tier of Scottish football and their hegemony has rarely faced any sustained challenge from anyone in the country.

With Rangers earning promotion to the top tier this season, many are hoping that the Old Firm rivalry will reignite Scottish football from next season, and bring some much needed competitiveness at the top of the pyramid.

Robertson feels Rangers and Celtic will bring back some optimism to Scottish football and while he admits returning to the glories of bygone eras is difficult, he insisted that the Old Firm can do a better job of selling the country’s brand of football to a wider audience.

“I think it would be great to see some more positivity in Scottish football”, the Rangers MD was quoted as saying the Herald Scotland.

“We need to get positive messages out there to market the game positively. Some of our signings – Joey [Barton] for example – and Celtic bringing in Brendan Rodgers, the game is more sellable.

“We are not where we were during the Dick Advocaat and Martin O’Neill era but we are getting to a stage where we can sell it again and people are more interested again.”

The first Old Firm derby of the new season will take place in September at Celtic Park.
