Tottenham Hotspur have had a bid for AZ Alkmaar striker Vincent Janssen rejected by the Dutch club, it has been claimed.

Janssen, 22, who scored 29 times for AZ in all competitions last season, finished the season as the highest goalscorer in the Eredivisie.

Spurs, who have already acquired the services of Southampton midfielder Victor Wanyama for an undisclosed fee, are intent on signing a striker who can act as back-up to Harry Kane, who made 38 appearances in the Premier League for the White Hart Lane based club last season.

The bid, which is reportedly €14m, has been been rejected by AZ, who are demanding €20m for their prized asset.

Janssen, who made his debut for the Dutch national side this year, scored on his full debut against England in a game that saw the Three Lions succumb to a 2-1 defeat.

AZ technical director Max Huiberts was quoted as saying by the BBC: "The difference between the offer and the price we demand was too big.

"I've read a lot of speculation and been telephoned by other clubs but no one else has made any concrete offer."

Janssen joined AZ from Dutch second division side Almere City for a fee in the region of €400,000 and is a product of the Feyenoord youth academy.
