Noel Whelan believes that Oxford United's asking price for striker Kemar Roofe is too high, despite his performances for the club last season.

The Whites are keen on snapping up Roofe, but Oxford have insisted that they will not sell Roofe for less than their £3m asking price.

Leeds had been eyeing paying just £1.5m, placing them well short of Oxford's expectations.

Whelan has backed the Whites' approach and although Roofe starred for Oxford last season, netting 25 goals, the former Leeds star believes £3m is just too high a price to pay for the 23-year-old.

"Oxford United are saying they want £3m for Kemar Roofe. Is that too much? I think with just one good season behind him it probably is, yes", Whelan wrote in his column in the Yorkshire Evening Post.

"When you have had one good season I guess you can demand a higher transfer fee but consistency is key.

"Anyone can have one good season but you have got to be doing it week-in, week-out and remembering that Chris Wood was £2m, it’s a lot to be paying for pretty much an unknown", he added.

Leeds do look to be set to sign one striker in the shape of Kalmar FF marksman Marcus Antonsson.

The Swedish striker is the top goalscorer in the Allsvenskan and has been a standout performer for Kalmar in the 2016 campaign in the Scandinavian country.
