Leeds United head coach Garry Monk wants to sign Kyle Bartley on a loan deal ahead of the new season.

Centre-back Bartley is firmly in Monk's sights as he looks to bolster his defensive options following Tommy Elphick's move from Bournemouth to Aston Villa.

Leeds were keen on Elphick, but it was Aston Villa who moved quickest to take the defender to Villa Park.

Now Monk has turned to Bartley and wants to sign the 25-year-old on loan, according to the Yorkshire Evening Post.

The former Swansea boss worked with Bartley at the Liberty Stadium and wants the defender to be signed on a season-long loan deal.

Bartley only has a contract running until next summer, which means Swansea may be reluctant to sanction a loan move for the entire 2016/17 campaign.

The defender played in Monk's final game as Swansea boss, a loss to Leicester City last season.

Bartley started his career in the youth ranks at Bolton Wanderers, before moving on to continue his footballing education at Arsenal.
