Marcus Antonsson believes Leeds United belong in the Premier League and is keen to help the club to return to the top flight of English football.

Leeds were relegated from the Premier League at the end of the 2003/04 season and have even suffered the ignominy of dropping down to the third tier of English football since their departure from the top flight.

Since their comeback season in the second tier in 2010/11, when they briefly flirted with promotion, the Whites have never been close to returning to the Premier League, regularly finishing in the bottom half of the Championship.

However, Antonsson is keen to change all that sooner rather than later. The Leeds new boy feels the club of their size should be in the top flight and is ready to help them to regain their Premier League status.

The Swede told LUTV: “One of the things that I felt when I came here was that Leeds United belongs in the Premier League – no question about that.

“The feeling I got when I first came here was that there’s something going on here – we’re looking to the Premier League.

“I’m looking forward to being part of that trip.”

Antonsson became the first signing of the summer for Leeds earlier today and the club are expected to further strengthen to help head coach Garry Monk and his team fight for a playoff spot next season.
