Italian outfit Empoli have officially confirmed the signing of Giuseppe Bellusci from English Championship side Leeds United.

The centre-back has headed back to his homeland on a season-long loan deal, which will keep him at Empoli throughout the 2016/17 campaign.

Empoli also have a purchase option included in the deal, should Bellusci impress during his time at the club.

The Italian side said in a statement: "Empoli FC announces that it has acquired Giuseppe Bellusci on loan with the option to buy dependent on the player's performance."

Bellusci joined Leeds in the summer of 2014, completing a move from Catania to Elland Road.

He quickly carved out a spot in the centre of defence for Leeds, however his performances often split opinion amongst the club's fans.

Indeed, Bellusci regularly made mistakes at the back which cost Leeds vital points in the Championship.

He was dropped towards the end of last season by former head coach Steve Evans, something which left the defender unhappy and led to him insisting the Whites concede fewer goals when he plays.
