Defender Neven Subotic is on the verge of leaving Borussia Dortmund after he was excused from training earlier this week to negotiate a transfer with an unnamed club.

The 27-year-old defender still has a year left on his contract with Dortmund, but he is expected to leave the club this summer after struggling to secure game time last season under Thomas Tuchel.

Dortmund resumed their pre-season training last week, and Subotic was part of the squad, but according to Bild, he was excused from training earlier this week in order to negotiate his transfer away from the Westfalenstadion with an unnamed club.

There has been speculation that Jurgen Klopp is prepared to take his former player to Liverpool this summer, but in recent days he has been widely linked with a move to Middlesbrough and 1.FC Koln.

Aitor Karanka is keen to build a team good enough to survive in the Premier League next season, and has already snapped up an experienced campaigner in Victor Valdes.
