Former Chelsea midfielder Michael Essien is in talks with Saudi Arabian side Al Ittihad, according to GhanaSoccernet.

Essien, who is 33 now, was plying his trade with Greek side Panathinaikos last season, where he made 13 appearances, scoring once.

The Ghanian joined Panathinaikos from AC Milan as a free agent, before having played for Chelsea for nine years from 2005 to 2014 and spent a season on loan at Real Madrid during the 2012/13 season under Jose Mourinho.

The unattached midfielder, who can also play as a right-back, is now in talks with Al Ittihad over a move that could reunite him with former AC Milan team-mate Sulley Muntari, who also joined the Gulf club on a free transfer last year.

The 33-year-old has represented the Ghanian national team 58 times over a period of 12 years from 2002 to 2014, after making his senior debut for the side at the age of 19.
