Leeds United chairman Massimo Cellino has revealed he would like to sign more British players for the Whites, but has bemoaned them often being financially out of reach.

Cellino is working hard in the transfer market for the Whites this summer, aiming to give new head coach Garry Monk a squad to compete for promotion from the Championship.

The Yorkshire giants have leaned towards British signings so far this summer, but Cellino has been careful to watch the cash.

Goalkeeper Rob Green, defender Kyle Bartley, midfielder Matt Grimes and striker Kemar Roofe are Leeds' British arrivals, but only Roofe cost the club a fee.

"I would love to have more British players", Cellino explained to Buzz.ie.

"Sometimes I cannot afford them.

"But what I am doing is giving a chance to young British players to come to our academy and play for Leeds."

Leeds could make further British signings this summer, with the Whites strongly linked with Fleetwood Town's Northern Ireland international Conor McLaughlin.

The right-back turned out for Northern Ireland at Euro 2016 and has also been linked with another Championship side in the shape of Reading.
