Despite having had a £25m offer accepted by Newcastle United, Liverpool are unlikely to complete the deal for Georginio Wijnaldum this evening.

Wijnaldum was involved at Newcastle's friendly against Doncaster Rovers on Wednesday night, but Liverpool achieved a breakthrough in talks with the Magpies over the Dutchman in the early hours of Thursday.

Liverpool are paying a fee of £25m for a player who cost Newcastle around £15m to sign from PSV Eindhoven last summer.

The deal will not be done tonight though, according to local Newcastle daily the Chronicle, meaning Liverpool will have to wait a little longer to get it over the line.

Wijnaldum has been tipped to have a medical with Liverpool tomorrow ahead of jetting off to the United States to meet his new team-mates on their pre-season tour.

The Dutchman had also attracted interest from Tottenham Hotspur, but Mauricio Pochettino's men cooled their interest recently.

His move to Liverpool will see his weekly wage go up from £50,000 per week to £75,000 per week, while he will also stay in the Premier League; Newcastle were relegated last season.
