Napoli striker and Arsenal target Gonzalo Higuain had a secret medical with Juventus in Madrid yesterday, and the Italian champions have agreed to trigger his hefty release club.

Azzurri president Aurelio De Laurentiis said recently that Juventus would not dare to trigger Higuain’s €94m release clause.

However, Juventus have agreed to trigger the release clause in the 28-year-old’s contract, and according to Italian broadcaster Sky Italia, they have already taken a few more steps to move forward with the deal.

It has been claimed that amidst complete secrecy Higuain underwent a medical with Juventus in Madrid yesterday, and has agreed personal terms with the Italian champions.

Juventus have agreed a four-year contract worth €7.5m per season, and he remains in charge of his image rights, which would take his yearly earnings to €10m.

With a medical done and contract agreed, Juventus have now made contact with Napoli and communicated their desire to trigger the release clause in the striker’s contract.

Juventus are expected to pay the hefty figure in two equal installments of €47m each, and despite their reservations, Napoli have very little option but to allow Higuain to leave.

Higuain was on fire last season in Italy, and scored 36 goals in 35 Serie A appearances.
